Specs and configurationsCollege is where a laptop becomes your notebook, library, TV and office all at once. It’ll be with you for four years, so this page sets a higher bar than our general student list.
Every laptop here is new, runs Windows or macOS, has 16 GB of memory, weighs under 3.5 lb (1.6 kg) and claims 10 hours or more of battery, all for under $1,600. That’s a short list on purpose. It’s mostly MacBook Airs, Surface laptops and slim Windows models like the Acer Aspire AI series, the kind you can carry across campus all day and forget it’s in your bag.
Why those numbers? 16 GB of memory keeps a laptop quick in year four, not just in year one. On most thin laptops it can’t be upgraded later. Battery matters because lecture halls never have enough outlets. And weight adds up when the laptop rides in your backpack alongside textbooks every day.
Before you buy, look up your program’s requirements. Some majors list a minimum spec or require Windows for specific software. If the budget is tighter, see cheap laptops for college students. If your major is technical, look at laptops for engineering students.
For most majors: 16 GB of memory, at least 256 GB of storage (512 GB if you keep files offline), a modern mid-range processor and a battery that gets through a full day of classes. Engineering, architecture and film students need more; see their own pages.
Yes, it's one of the most common college laptops for good reason: it's light, silent, lasts all day and stays fast for years. Just confirm that any software your major needs has a Mac version.
If you like handwriting notes or annotating PDFs, a 2-in-1 with a pen is great. If you mostly type, a regular laptop is usually lighter and has a better keyboard for the money.
This page only lists new laptops, so the battery and support start fresh for four years. Renewed laptops can save money, but check the battery health and how long the processor will get updates.
