Specs and configurationsA 17-inch laptop makes sense when the laptop lives on a desk and you want the biggest screen you can get without a separate monitor. It’s popular with people who find small text hard to read, families sharing one computer, and gamers who want the most immersive screen.
This page includes 17.3-inch and 18-inch laptops, and they fall into two very different groups. Everyday 17.3-inch laptops, such as HP’s 17-inch models and the Lenovo V17, are big, simple machines with a full keyboard and number pad. 18-inch gaming laptops, including the Razer Blade 18, ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18, Alienware 18 Area-51 and MSI models, are flagship machines with powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics.
Whichever you choose, accept the trade-offs. These laptops are heavy, rarely fit standard laptop bags, and the gaming ones need a large power brick and won’t last long on battery. Check the published weight and dimensions on each laptop’s page before you buy.
For something easier to carry with a still-roomy screen, see 16-inch laptops. For more number-pad options, see laptops with a number pad.
Yes, but there are fewer of them. Everyday 17.3-inch laptops from HP and Lenovo are still around, and at the high end, gaming laptops have moved to 18-inch screens. This page includes both.
Everyday 17.3-inch laptops start around 4.5 lb (2 kg). 18-inch gaming laptops are much heavier, often 7 lb (3.2 kg) or more before the large power adapter.
It can be. The big screen and full keyboard with number pad make it comfortable for all-day desk work, and you can still move it to another room. If you never move it, a desktop or a smaller laptop with a monitor gives you more for the money.
