Specs and configurationsThe Ethernet port is one of the first things laptop makers remove when they make a laptop thinner, so finding one takes more effort than it used to. Every laptop on this page has a built-in RJ-45 port in its published specs, which means you can plug straight into a router, a wall socket or a dock without an adapter.
Gaming laptops make up the biggest group. A wired connection keeps lag low and steady in online games, so models from Lenovo LOQ and Legion, HP Victus and OMEN, Acer Nitro, ASUS ROG and TUF, MSI, Alienware and Razer still include one, often next to an HDMI port and plenty of USB. The catch: they’re heavy, often 5 lb (2.3 kg) or more, with shorter battery life.
Business laptops are the second group. Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude and Dell Pro, and HP ProBook models keep Ethernet for office networks and IT departments that require it. They’re usually lighter than gaming laptops and come with good keyboards and long support. Renewed business laptops with Ethernet are also a common budget find.
Budget 15.6-inch laptops round it out. Models such as the Lenovo V15 have the space for a full-size port, and some school Chromebooks have one too.
Don’t need it every day? A USB-C to Ethernet adapter gives almost any laptop a gigabit wired connection, so you don’t have to pick a heavier laptop just for the port. A built-in port wins if you plug in daily or need Ethernet and all your USB ports at the same time.
We collected and analyzed the published port lists for every laptop here, so you can filter by the other ports you need too. For more business picks, see business laptops; for gaming, see gaming laptops.
Yes, but mostly in three groups: business laptops (Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude and Dell Pro, HP ProBook), gaming laptops, and budget 15.6-inch laptops such as the Lenovo V15. Thin laptops, MacBooks and most 2-in-1s dropped it to save space.
A cable gives you steadier speed and lower lag than Wi-Fi, which matters for online gaming, large downloads, video calls on a busy network and offices or dorms with weak Wi-Fi. Some workplaces and schools also require a wired connection for security.
For most people, yes. A USB-C or USB-A adapter with a gigabit Ethernet port is cheap and fast enough for almost any home connection. A built-in port is nicer if you plug in every day, because there's nothing to forget or lose.
Most are gigabit (1 Gbps), which is faster than most home internet plans. Some gaming laptops have 2.5 Gbps ports, which only help if your router and internet plan are faster than 1 Gbps.
Look for an RJ-45 or LAN port in the port list. On the laptop itself, it's the wider, square socket with a hinged flap on thin models. Every laptop on this page lists one in its published specs.
