Specs and configurationsVirtual reality is the hardest job you can give a gaming laptop. The headset shows a separate image to each eye, at a higher resolution than most laptop screens, and it has to do it 72 to 120 times a second without stumbling. Miss frames on a monitor and the game stutters. Miss them in a headset and the world lags behind your head, which is the fastest way to feel sick.
The graphics card is the whole story. Every laptop on this page runs Windows and comes with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, 5060 or faster (or a workstation card at the same level) and at least 16 GB of memory in at least one configuration. Many models are also sold with a smaller card, so pick that configuration when you buy. That’s comfortably above Meta’s recommended specs for Link, which ask for an RTX 20-series card and 16 GB. An RTX 4060 or 5060 handles most VR games. An RTX 5070 Ti, 5080 or 5090 is for flight and racing sims, high-resolution headsets and turning the settings up.
Decide how the headset connects. Most people play on a standalone headset like a Meta Quest, connected to the laptop by a USB-C cable (Link) or over Wi-Fi (Air Link). A cable is the steadiest option. Wireless feels freer, but wants a Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router close by, with the laptop plugged into it by Ethernet if you can. Some newer headsets come with a USB wireless adapter that plugs straight into the laptop. Headsets that use a DisplayPort cable are pickier: the port has to be wired to the dedicated graphics card. Many laptops route USB-C to the built-in graphics instead, so check the maker’s spec sheet before you buy one for that kind of headset.
Plan to play plugged in. VR keeps the graphics card at full load for the whole session. On battery, laptops cut graphics power hard, and frame rates fall with it. Laptops with bigger cooling and higher GPU power limits (TGP) hold their speed longer, which is worth comparing on the spec sheet.
Football is one of the VR genres that makes the most of your body. You head the ball, dive for saves and turn to track a pass yourself, so how the game feels depends on how fast it reacts. Sports games like these are usually lighter on the graphics card than sims, and an RTX 4060 or 5060 laptop runs them smoothly. What matters more is keeping the frame rate steady during quick head turns and fast shots, and having room to move: clear a space of at least 6.5 by 6.5 feet (2 by 2 meters) before you start diving around. A wireless connection helps here too, because there’s no cable to trip over when you go for the ball.
Want the same graphics power for ordinary games? See all gaming laptops, or start with budget gaming laptops if you’ll keep VR to lighter games.
Yes, as long as it has a strong enough dedicated graphics card. A laptop with built-in graphics can't keep up with a headset. From an RTX 4060 or 5060 upward, laptops run most PC VR games well.
Not for PC VR. Meta Horizon Link and SteamVR, the two apps that connect a headset to a computer, run on Windows. Every laptop on this page runs Windows.
It works for lighter games at lower settings, but leaves little room once a game gets busy, and dropped frames are much harder to ignore in a headset than on a screen. That's why this list starts at the RTX 4060 and 5060. Meta says laptop RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti cards aren't recommended for Link.
A cable gives the most stable picture and the lowest delay. Wireless is more comfortable and freer to move in, but needs a fast connection: a Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router close to where you play, or the USB wireless adapter that some headsets come with.
Headsets that plug into a DisplayPort need a video output wired to the graphics card, not to the processor's built-in graphics. Many laptops route their USB-C ports to the built-in chip. Check the maker's manual or spec sheet for a Mini DisplayPort or a USB-C port with DisplayPort that runs from the dedicated card.
